‘Deep tissue’ is a massage technique that focuses on realigning the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) can be found in muscles. These can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage uses deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles, physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement.
Use is made of knuckles, fists, elbows and forearms (hands-free massage), as well as techniques including Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Stretching (PNF)
Deep tissue massage concentrates on treating specific problems, such as:
Chronic pain
Sports injuries
Osteoarthritis
Fibromyalgia
Postural problems
Muscle tension and spasm
However, it can also:
Increase blood flow
Assist in removal of toxins
Eliminate scar tissue
Increase mobility
