Psychotherapeutic Coaching

Psychotherapeutic Coaching
Traditionally, a Psychotherapist or Counsellor will examine the issues that are causing the current difficulties and seek to solve the problem by looking at events in the past, (Psychological Archaeology). There are some problems with this approach, however.
- Firstly, understanding what drives your behaviour doesn’t help you to change it.
- Secondly, research shows that this type of therapy is contraindicated for depression and anxiety disorders, as the constant rehashing of the original events serves to retraumatise you all over again.
Conversely, a Life Coach will focus on the present and the future, concentrating on helping you to set goals and tasks and will help you with tools, techniques and motivate you to reach those goals. The problem with this approach alone is that it doesn’t address the underlying issues that may cause you to sabotage your efforts.
Now you don’t need to choose between these approaches
Psychotherapeutic Coaching
- offers a fusion of the professional skills of Psychotherapy, Counselling and Life Coaching.
- uses advanced life coaching skills to promote emotional well-being.
- offers a solution focused approach in a therapeutic context.
I draw on the Human Givens Psychotherapy framework to see where your life is not working well and tailor solutions for you using a combination of effective psychological interventions, education and direct practical help, as appropriate. This approach brings insights into what we all need to live fulfilled, satisfying lives and also points to concrete ways of achieving and maintaining such a state.
Having established where in the wheel of life your needs aren’t being met, you are coached and encouraged to set small tasks which will move you nearer to your desired future. You will also explore your inner resources, those qualities which have carried you through life’s difficulties in the past and which are, therefore, available to you to use in the present and the future. You will also be given tools and techniques to help you on this journey, which will give you understanding of your situation and practical ways to deal with your difficulties.
The success produced by the efficacy, adaptability and practical nature of this approach is often startling.
